Richard Leah Tredrea
In 1852 William Leah was born followed in 1853 by Richard Thomas. On October 27th 1854 Richard and Eliza together with the two children sailed on the "Shand" reaching Portland Victoria on January 20th 1855, their ages were listed as 31, 23, 2 and infant.
Richard’s first job was as bottom man in a saw pit, never a pleasant task. How long that lasted is not known, but Richard eventually found work more suited to his skills. On June 24th 1855 Eliza Ann was born, by this time the family were living in Henty Street in a rented cottage with garden owned by a Mr Shield.
All was not work; Richard occasionally sought diversion in wrestling and boxing, then highly regarded as fun, at the corner of Gawler and Bentinck Streets, on the waterfront where a tavern stood called "Yankee Doodle Inn" a meeting place for whalers (some of the Yankees) and the bullock drivers who provided the land transport of goods and sometimes people. Naturally arguments arose, many being settled by resort to an enjoyable brawl, in this Richard was known to participate.
At what date the Tredrea’s transferred to Hamilton (Victoria) is not yet known but it was sometime after the birth of their second daughter Sarah Grace, she being babtised in the same church as Eliza Ann, this being St. Stephen’s Anglican Church Portland. The baptism was conducted on April 5th 1857. The twins Elizabeth Mary and Susan are presumed to have been born in Hamilton. They unfortunately only lived for three months. Abraham and Isaac were the next to be born, followed by Elizabeth Jane, Mary Ellen, Amelia Coroline and John. Two of the girls, Elizabeth and Amelia died young.
Eliza Ann, Sarah Grace, Marry Ellen (Polly) were skilled at needlework and Polly was also an accomplished musician, playing the piano at the local dances. John also was a talented fiddler and he and Polly often played together.
Polly a forceful character went into business, having a "Fancygoods Repository" in Hamilton and later in Bendigo. She married Horatio Valentine Roper, then Charles Northcott, surviving both.
William Leah became a horse trainer with stables in Balaclava Road Caufield, later acted as a commission agent dealing in horses from an office at No. 10 Warwick Chambers, 419a Bourke Street, City.
Richard Thomas became a butcher, as did Isaac, at times the two worked together, other times apart. They had shops at several locations in Hamilton, Rutherglen, Warracknabeal and Albany where Isaac who never married died in 1925, followed by Richard in 1935. Richard’s sons continued the business until 1950. Sarah Grace married William Thomas Cory and lived for some years in Deniliquin. Eliza Ann married William Jones Sweatman, coachbuilder, wheelwright and carpenter. Eliza Ann died at Warracknabeal in 1897.
Abraham, a tailor had a tragically short marriage, his wife Anabella McLeod died just weeks after the birth of their first child Francis Stanley. This son married in 1914, had a son Harold Stanley. Francis Stanley died in France in 1916. John’s first marriage to Mary Beatrice Snell produced three daughters of whom two died in infancy. The third daughter Merle died at the age of 25, about a year after her marriage to Thomas Phillips.
